Also at the Bluffton Arts and Seafood Festival sales at my booth were pretty good. The top sellers were not photos of local-style wildlife and birds, but photos from Africa and Alaska of zebras and bears. Next year I will have more of that style for sale. The Festival was fun and educational.

My next plan is a booth at the Beaufort SC Water Festival in July 2012.

After winning Best In Show of the St. Augustine Alligator Farm and Zoo 18th Annual Photo Contest July 2012, I was just notified that three of my six entries into the NANPA (North American Nature Photographers Association) 2012 Showcase Competition were chosen in Tier 3.

No, I wasnâ€™t a bigtime winner, but I will have three images out 250 displayed online and in a magazine in 2012. Awright!!!

Former Beaufort Gazette photographer Sue Jarrett recently won Best In Show in the 2011 St. Augustine Alligator Farm 18th Annual Photography Contest. The photograph shows a snowy egret and a tri-colored or Louisiana Heron arguing over air space.

This year's contest was judged by wildlife photographer Robert O'Toole. Entries were received from all over the United States and parts of Canada. With nearly 400 photos submitted, O'Toole faced quite a challenge during the selection process. This yearâ€™s winning photographs will be on display at the St. Augustine Alligator Farm and on its website www.alligatorfarm.us/photography.html

Earlier this year Jarrett also had a wildlife photo selected in a juried competition for display in the St. Augustine Art Association Spring Show, and in 2009 and 2010 Jarrett was a finalist in the annual Nature's Best Photography Magazine competitions.

Besides wildlife photography awards, Jarrett won numerous photojournalism awards from the South Carolina Press Association while working at The Beaufort Gazette and from the Iowa Press Women Inc. when working for The Ottumwa Courier. In 1996 Jarrett won first place in the Photojournalism category of Popular Photography Magazine's Great Picture Contest.

Jarrett is a member of Nikon Professional Services, World Wildlife Fund, National Wildlife Federation, African Wildlife Foundation, North America Nature Photographers Association, Carolina Nature Photographers Association, the Photography Club of Beaufort and the Beaufort Art Association.

Facebook members can vote for the egret and heron photograph in another competition at http://www.facebook.com/Rainforest.Expeditions. Click that you "like" the page, then click on "photos" and then go into "Photo Contest #1." Jarrett's entry is on the bottom left, so click on it to enlarge and hit "like" to vote for it. Weddings and Wildlife

Yes, my theme Weddings & Wildlife is underway. May weddings on weekends with wildlife photo trips during the week. Brides are ready for their Special Day and bears are popping up in the Smokies with cubs. Also, egret, heron, spoonbill, etc chicks are popping out in nests all over the Southeast.

Iâ€™m busy and enjoying it at the same time. Weddings are fun â€" like parties and a big celebration theme, and wildlife photography is calm and relaxing. A great combination!

Exhibits and displays

Right now my prints are on exhibit and for sale at Lowcountry Medical Group, Beaufort Memorial Hospital OB/GYN department, and the Beaufort Art Association Spring Show at Green Street Gym now known as Charles Lund Gym. Peoplesâ€™ Choice Award voting is going on until Saturday March 26, so stop by and vote for either Spoonie Youths or Dancing Egret.

Next month April 28-May 1 two will be on digital display at the St. Augustine Birding and Photo Fest and possibly at the St. Augustine Art Association Nature and Wildlife Juried Exhibit April 27-May 29. I havenâ€™t heard from the jury yet, but have my fingers crossed! Those entries are the Spoonie Youths taken in Florida and the Burrowing Owls taken in Florida.

I am also waiting to hear from the Hilton Head Art League Biennial Juried Show. That decision is supposed to come out today and if Iâ€™m picked, the display will be from May 7-29. Those entries are the Vervet Monkey Mom and Child from Africa and the Tri-neck Giraffes from Africa.

Right now all I am mentioning is exhibit and display, not awards. Fingers are crossed for that, too!

Well, Spring has Sprung even though the weather here has not really warmed up yet. What has sprung is all the art and photography contests in the local area and elsewhere.

Iâ€™ll be entering all of these and hope that the juried exhibitions will accept my work:

The Beaufort Art Association Spring Show starts March 18 and runs through March 27.
The Hilton Head Arts League Juried Show is May 7 to May 29.
The St. Augustine Birding and Photo Fest Show will be April 28 through May 1.
The St. Augustine Art Association Nature and Wildlife Juried Exhibition will be April 27 through May 29.

Photos Sales

Sales of my photos from Africa are going great at Lowcountry Medical Group Clinic! I have sold two 20x30 canvas photos in the last two months. One was of a Vervet Monkey and child and the other was a Plains Zebra and child. Now on display are a 16x20 canvas of three baby egrets and a 20x30 canvas photo of three reticulated giraffes with their necks all wrapped together.

In a week I should hear if my semi-final photo in the Natureâ€™s Best Photography Magazine Backyard competition has advanced farther. Fingers crossed!!

Within the next two months I will have a new website to sell my wildlife photos. I have several things to work out first and then will open the new site which will be secure and will accept Pay Pal or credit card orders.

On Monday Jan. 10, 2011 I will be speaking at the Photography Club of Beaufort about TRAVEL (with your gear) PHOTOGRAPHY. The meeting starts at 7pm at Bldg 22 at TCL. I will be talking about carrying equipment on trips like mine to Africa and Alaska where weight not money has a lot to do with what you take with you. The tour groups have restrictions regarding weight and have some ideas about how to handle that effectively.

A little relaxing time

Beaufortâ€™s Night on the Town is over and hundreds of people were on Bay Street and a lot came into Simply Southern to buy things, including my photographs. Also, a good crowd showed up at the county library for the Photography Club of Beaufort show. This show lasts until Dec. 31 and one of my photos is on sale there and you can vote on Peopleâ€™s Choice Award. There are some really great photographs on display there.

The display at Beaufort Memorial Hospital will end this coming weekend. The photos I have left over from that show will be on display and for sale at The Autism Foundation Benefit on Dec. 18 out at Cat Island golf course clubhouse.

Wildlife photography will be up and running next week in Tennessee (The Smoky Mountains) and after Christmas in Massachusetts.

Yes, I know, I have been bad about blogging on a regular basis. I am just not used to it, and I am trying to GET used to doing it. Anyway:

Plans are to go again in Nov. 2011 with a group of other photographers.

Also, I am setting up a trip for April/May 2011 to photograph birds on ranches in South Texas.

If you are interested in either trip, let me know. The more participants, the lower the cost.

Last night Friday May 7 was really fun and interesting. I was photographing the Confirmation Rite Ceremony at St. Peter's Catholic Church on Ladys Island SC. The Bishop was great, casual, relaxed and interesting. The young men and women were still really nervous however. Next week, Tennessee Smokey Mountains for deer, black bears and bear cubs, and then on down to Florida for herons, storks, egrets, flamingoes, spoonbills and many more!

Water Festival Over--Time to prep for next trips

My 15th year as the Festival Photographer for the 54th Annual Beaufort SC Water Festival is over. 3600 photos later it is time to relax a little.

I will be preparing for a quick trip in September to the Wildlife Preserve at Land Between the Lakes in Western TN/KY to photograph the bison and elks. September is mating time for the elks or rather BUGLING season. I hope to get some great shots of bucks raising their giant antlered heads and bellowing for the ladies!

Also this month is prep time for my Africa Photo Safari in November. Have to order visas for Kenya and Tanzania and get a million shots from a nurse in Hilton Head. Ouch!!

Also prepping camera bags and luggage to be allowed on the flights. I haven't been on a plane since December 1996 and on a flight out of the country since 1973. Not only have things changed a lot since then, but things have REALLY changed since 9/11!

Planning on buying some portable hard drives to make backup copies of my images since I can't take my laptop (too big 17") with me to Africa. Also have purchased some body washclothes for in between overnight flights, security chains for camera bags, TSA locks, power converter and plug converters, and lots of different kinds of mosquito repellents.

Winding Down

Things are finally starting to wind down a little from how busy I have been the past few days, weeks, months.

Next week I will head back up to Tennessee and then make a quick trip back to Florida.

Plans are underway for the Africa Wildlife Photo Safari in November. Deposits made and now the visa and vaccination steps are in the planning stage. Different people tell me I need different shots, so we'll see what the Doc says.
